TEEN PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
CLASSES ON LONG ISLAND

IN- PERSON AND ONLINE

In our Teen Portfolio Development classes, students develop terrific pieces for their portfolio while learning a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of drawing and painting in the classical tradition. Our curriculum helps students develop excellent observational and conceptual skills in multiple genres. These skills are needed for the first studio year in college and beyond. Now in our 13th year, our graduates have an excellent rate of placement and scholarships to top colleges of their choice.

Teens begin by learning concepts such as line, value, form, color and composition. Then students move onto painting, working on still-life, landscape and portraiture and figure from the live model. Students will work in pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic and oils. They will focus on creating works from observation, but also learn valuable conceptual skills.

Our Portfolio Development classes are highly tailored around each students strengths and interests. Our instructors monitor every student’s progress to ensure portfolio requirements are being fulfilled. We make it our job to stay abreast of the latest changes in portfolio requirements.

In addition, we also offer portfolio curatorial services, to help students assemble the best portfolio possible for college admission. We have helped students gain admission to Pratt, RISD, SVA, Ringling, Brown, Tufts/SMFA, SCAD and other schools, some with complete scholarships.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

I was searching for the perfect art school and mentor for my daughter to build her portfolio to get into the New York City Specialty High Schools. I have to say finding Rob Zeller at The Teaching Studios of Art was the best thing I ever did for Taylor. He helped her focus and taught her the techniques she needed to fine tune her portfolio. With her Still Life pieces, he took her through the entire process of pencil sketch to transforming them into the most amazing oil paintings. She also did a self portrait and some figure drawings.

She then applied to her top 3 NYC DOE Specialty High Schools with this portfolio. She got into her 1st choice: The High School of Art & Design in Manhattan! We will be back to Teaching Studios when its time to apply for college.

I can not say enough positive things about Robert Zeller and the Teaching Studios of Art in Oyster Bay, NY. When we needed to find an art studio where our High School Senior could receive instruction and guidance, we thought we were going to have to travel to Manhattan. We were so pleasantly surprised to find a premier learning environment right here on Long Island. The Teaching Studios of Art is a haven for students interested in the arts. The instruction is incredible. It’s like learning from the masters. Not only did our son's skill increase under their tutelage but so did his complete appreciation for the fine arts. In addition to strong instruction Rob and the other instructors/artists at the studio are an invaluable resource for portfolio development and review when the time comes for submitting your work for continued higher education in the fine arts. Whether you want to pursue art as your lifelong journey or dip you toe in as a hobbyist or just to learn an appreciation for what the arts bring to us everyday, you must visit the Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay.

Portrait Painting And Drawing

IN-PERSON CLASS
Mondays, 7-9pm

In Portrait Painting And Drawing, students will learn to draw and paint a portrait from the live model through both observation of the surface form of the face and understanding the structure underneath.  To capture a likeness, we will study the proportions of the face as well as basic anatomy of the skull and facial muscles.  Students will learn to assign a range of values and colors to match the skin tones in light and shadow, also learn to depict the textures of skin and hair. The instructor will demonstrate, in a slow, step-by-step process—using the same drawing and painting materials as the students— who will follow along and develop their own drawings and paintings in a similar manner.
